Dr. Brenda Lau is a Pain Specialist/Anesthesiologist practicing in Vancouver and Surrey, BC and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) since 2004. In 2007, she became a Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Australia & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists after completing a two year Pain Medicine fellowship and Master of Medicine degree in Sydney, Australia with Professor Michael Cousins.
Brenda is passionate about helping people suffering from pain get access to the help they need. This means improving the understanding of pain, improving pain treatments, and increasing opportunities for pain care training. Brenda is intent on seeking practical approaches to changing the way we manage pain and develop sustainable infrastructure to chronic pain syndromes, which impact 1 in 5 British Columbians.
On a provincial level, Brenda was a founder and board member of, and continues to contribute to, the Pain BC Society. She has been involved in several provincial wide services including Providence Health Care RACE hotline and co-chaired the Pain Practice Support Program sponsored by the joint Ministry of Health-Doctors of BC Specialist and General Practice Service Committees. Brenda has also been developing region-wide pain initiatives in the Fraser Health Authority and more recently in the Northern Health Authority.
Brenda also helped launch the UBC-funded pain research through CRAMP (Clinician Researchers Advancing the Management of Pain) and innovation initiatives at the CHANGEpain Clinic to improve pain treatments and more effective ways of delivering care.
Brenda is past Medical Director of the Surrey Memorial Hospital Pain Management Clinic, past Chair of the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) Pain Services Division supporting the development of various acute and chronic pain services across 10 FHA hospital sites.
To increase training opportunities for physicians, in 2011 Brenda became the Chair, UBC Pain Medicine Residency Committee. In this role she spent over 2,000 volunteer hours working with a committed UBC Clinical faculty group to establish and deliver UBC’s first Pain Medicine sub-specialty training program involving many healthcare disciplines. This new sub-specialty was approved in to start the training program in July 2015. Click here for the March 2015 announcement to her colleagues.
Besides practicing at CHANGEpain, Brenda maintains her anesthesiology practice at the Surrey Memorial Hospital and her interventional pain management practice with the St. Paul’s Hospital Pain Center.
